Is it offensive to describe myself as half Cape Coloured
I am a 17 year old girl and I have grown up in the UK, but my father is cape coloured, but a South African person (although they were white not coloured), told me it’s offensive to say that, because I did not grow up in the Cape myself, and should only say ‘coloured,’ not ‘cape coloured.’ Both of my parents are from the cape (my father is from Cape Town, and my mother from PE). My father and siblings still live in Cape Town. My family always told me I was “half Cape coloured,” but I was told by this person that it can be offensive to people from the Cape to call myself that, because ‘Cape’ is not a race but a culture, while only ‘coloured’ is a race.
Hi Yeoui,
There is a pretty interesting documentary called “Coloured Mentality” coming up, which is touching on this subject.
See: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1bL50P7GzQKhorkDC6cdyg on YouTube.
Would be pretty interesting though to get a discussion here, where more folks would express their opinion.
